oh jeez! that's an endless discussion.... anyway, it depends on what you want to do and where. i myself travel in countries where part of the road system is rather on the natural side. for example in laos around 70 % of the roads are dirt roads. in addition quite a few parts of laos are also fairly mountainous.
therefore i prefer a mountain bike. another reason for that preference is that i do mountainbiking at home and i don't feel like having several bikes.
you hear often that roadbikes are faster and require less of an effort to move it. well, that is subjective to a very large degree.
the difference in rolling resistance is very slim. rather the aerodynamic posture on a street racer makes you travel faster.
in the end you need as much energy on a road bike as on a mtb unless you are on flat smooth road.
here is my current bike (which i bought used on craigslist for $700 3 weeks before the trip):
2003 cannondale caad4 hardtail
fork: lefty sl elo
brakes:hayes hydraulic disc brakes front and rear
group; shimano xtr
saddle: wtb laser v
handle bar grips: Ergon GC2-L Grips
rims: Sun-Ringle DS1-XC
rear hub: dt swiss
i outfitted it with a tubus disco rack which is specifically for rear disc brake frames.
my panniers are ortlieb classics.
